Ultraviolet (UV) Rays are strong here in Florida no matter what time of year it is; and they are the strongest between 10 am and 4pm. Here’s another fun (or maybe not so fun) fact you may not know. You can even be affected by UV rays inside your home, office or car if you sit next to a sunny window.

UV rays can cause sunburn, skin cancer, cataracts and speed up the aging process, causing wrinkles and fine lines. Protecting against the harmful effects of the sun’s UV rays is no joke. You can use a hat and sunglasses to help protect yourself against UV rays, but you also need to arm yourself with effective sunscreen.

So how do you know which sunscreen is best? Part of the answer to that question lies with you. For instance, do you prefer lotions or sprays? Plus, maybe you prefer not to place anything greasy or heavy on your skin or you have sensitive skin to consider.

According to Consumer Reports, if you prefer lotion, Coppertone Ultraguard SPF 70 and CVS Health Ultra-Protection Sun Lotion are both smart purchases. As for sunscreen spray (which should never be sprayed in your face because you could get it in your eyes or mistakenly inhale it), Trader Joe’s SPF 50, and Neutrogena Beach Defense SPF 70 were also on Consumer Reports’ list of best sunscreens.

Certain research indicates that oxybenzone (a major ingredient in many sunscreens) may be harmful to the environment and animals and may even interfere with human hormones. Consumer Reports suggests Hawaiian Ultra-Radiance Lotion or Island Sport Ultra-Light Spray if you choose to go oxybenzone-free.

SPF stands for sun protection factor. The Food and Drug Administration recommends at least 15 SPF or higher and the American Academy of Dermatology says that number should actually be at least 30. Dermatologists suggest lightweight sunscreens for the face and sensitive skin. Among those specifically suggested in this capacity were Aveeno, Cerave, Neutrogena, Cetaphil and Ponds.

Also, don’t forget your puppy! That’s right, dogs need sunscreen too and there are sunscreens that are specifically made for and are safe to use on dogs.
