Here in New Smyrna Beach where it is often the case that you can enjoy sun-filled days year-round, it is important to develop a respectful relationship with the sun, to maintain good health and continue looking your best. Here are some tips to help you keep safe in the sun…
Try to avoid extended exposure during the times when the sun is the harshest. That’s midday – between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun is at its peak.
Don’t forget the sunscreen and use it correctly…applying SPF 50 with UVA and UVB protection before you head outside and reapply every two hours, as well when you wear it away with swimming or excessive sweating. Plus, did you know that there are spray, powder and foam sunscreens specifically created for your scalp, providing effective results without getting your hair greasy?
You may also want to shield your sensitive face, skin and neck with the added protection of a sun hat or umbrella, keeping in mind that certain caps and visors often don’t provide enough coverage to completely protect you from the sun’s rays.
Speaking of protective covering, what you wear can help too, from hats, to clothing and swimsuits that provide UV protection. Unbleached cotton can also absorb UV rays; and while polyester and silks may not be as cool, they can also provide protection from the sun by reflecting radiation.
Sun safety doesn’t end there. After you have spent time in the sun, it is always good to apply aloe infused lotion to your skin; and if you happen to get a bit of a sunburn, apply straight aloe directly to the affected areas.
