From amazing waterfront dining, to challenging golf courses, miles of pristine beaches and beachside shopping, as well as ample cultural opportunities including meandering through art galleries or taking in a live theatrical or musical performance, guests of The Sandpiper in New Smyrna Beach are no stranger to a myriad of remarkable things to see and do.
However, one well-kept secret you may not be aware of is Tiger Bay State Park. Made up of approximately 27,400 acres – half of which are scattered pine forests and half wetlands, this natural wonderland also includes two lakes, several ponds and its forest is part of an extensive wildlife corridor which is home to black bear, deer, fox, turkey, hogs and many species of birds including bald eagles.
Tiger Bay State Park also includes a hidden gem – more than two miles of the Pershing Highway, which is a brick road constructed in 1917 to connect Daytona Beach to DeLand! Portions of this historic treasure are accessible to the public. So, feel free to take a leisurely stroll on a path that has been traveled over 100 years.
In addition to its glorious natural views and miles of trails, Tiger Bay State Forest serves an even bigger purpose. After the devastating wildfires of 1998, Tiger Bay State Forest became part of the Environmentally Endangered Lands Programs and plays a pivotal role in an aggressive reforestation program and improving wildlife habitat.
A $2 day pass will grant you access to all the state forests from sunup to sundown. Tiger Bay State Park, offering something for everyone – from hiking, to biking, paddle boating, picnicking, fishing, camping, horseback riding and more, extends north and south of U.S. Highway 92 and is located just seven miles west of Daytona Beach.
