Florida is known for its great weather, but it can also get pretty hot. Here are a couple of suggestions that can help you beat the heat…
First, let’s address food and drinks. The body generates heat when it processes food, so sticking to smaller meals will help you combat the heat. Avoid hot foods and drinks. Ingesting anything hot will only amplify the effects of a hot day. So, if you’re on vacation, the natural next step might be a refreshing, frozen margarita! However, keep in mind that alcohol can dilate the blood vessels and move warm blood closer to your skin. So if you don’t want to risk feeling flush in the heat, drink plenty of water or electrolyte-infused drinks, like Gatorade or Pedialyte. V-8 and Propel Vitamin Water offer some delicious fruity options too.
Umbrellas, misting and even those tiny, portable fans can help beat the heat, but you also want to dress smart when it is hot. Choose lighter, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen as opposed to silk and nylon. Loose clothing, allowing for air between fabric and skin is also a more comfortable choice. You’ll want to opt for shorts or skirts and short sleeves as opposed to long pants and long sleeves. Even your shoe choice can help, as flip flops and sandals (without socks, for a variety of reasons) are cooler than sneakers, shoes and boots. Keeping your hair off the back of your neck helps too, so keep it short or pull it up if you can.
Plus, did you know that your body has its very own cooling points? Yep! An ice pack, cold water or a cool towel on your wrists, forehead, armpits, behind your knees or in the crook of your elbow can cool you off quickly.
Avoiding being outdoors during the hottest part of the day can help too. The mornings and evenings are cooler, and find some shade, as spending any length of time in the direct sun is definitely a hot prospect.
Also be careful not to overexert yourself in the heat. Swimming and water sports are a great pastime when it is hot and you certainly can find plenty of either in Florida. And, of course, if you stay at The Sandpiper just steps from the beach and offering a gorgeous pool area, you’ve got some heat beaters built right in!
